Over 50% American Patients Not Given The Option Of Statins By Doctors

Statin is a cholesterol lowering medicine. Most of the American patients who suffered from high blood pressure informed that they are not using Statin to lower their cholesterol because their doctors did not prescribe the same. This information has been provided by a new research.

In this research 5,693 people were surveyed. The leads were collected from Patient & Provider Assessment of Lipid Management Registry. This is a database maintained across United States. As per this register 1,511 Americans were not receiving statin treatment though all of them were adults and fulfilled the criteria to get the medicine. The criteria for being eligible for this medicine have been mentioned in the 2013 guidelines of the American College of Cardiology & American Heart Association. Again out of these 1,511 patients, 59% informed their doctor did not prescribe this medicine. 10% informed they didn’t take the medication though the same was prescribed to them while 30.7% informed they started the dose but then chose to stop it. All these details were published in the Journal of American Heart Association.

When further analyzed, it was seen that out of 59% who said that they were not prescribed statins by their doctors are either women, uninsured or African-Americans. Bad cholesterol is considered bad for the heart and statin helps to reduce the same in the body. The medicine is known to reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes in the body. The doctors are suggested by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology to use a 10 years risk calculator to identify which patients might get the best benefits by using this medication. As per the US Centre for Disease Control & Prevention, there are almost 78 million IS residents who are wither having statin or are eligible to consume it.
