Ex NASA Astronaut To Contest For Senate Seat

Mark Kelly a former astronaut of NASA has announced that he will also be contesting for the US presidential elections as a Democrat candidate from Arizona. He declared his plans early this week to run for the seat through social media through a 4 ½ minute video about himself that included details about his NASA career. In the video he described the experience of being an astronaut which prepared him to understand that all living beings on earth have to live and enjoy gifts of nature in harmony. He is running for the seat which was previously held by Senator John McCain till he expired last August.

The seat then had been taken over by Senator Jon Kyl but he stepped down towards end of 2018. Republican governor Doug Ducey then named Martha McSally to hold the seat till special election in 2020. She ran for a senate seat in 2018 to replace Sen Jeff Flake who was retiring but lost it to Democratic candidate Krysten Sinema. Kelly was then nominated by Democrats as a likely candidate for the Arizona seat. McSally will seek nomination from Republican Party for 2020 and the person who emerges as winner can run for six year term till 2022.

Kelly was selected by NASA as an astronaut in 1996 and was a part of four shuttle missions in 2001 and 2006 as a pilot. As was a commander for space flights in 2008 and 2011 after which he retired from NASA. He spouse in Gabrielle Gifford who was a member of Congress but was critically wounded during a shootout at a parking lot in Tucson forcing her to resign and focus on recovery. Both are avid supporters of gun control and during his introduction video Kelly said that his focus would be on improving economy, healthcare and climate change.
